Suzuki has a significant history with motorbikes. Suzuki started manufacturing motorcycles in 1952 with the first models being motorized bicycles. During the 1950s, 1960s and the better part of the 1970s, the company manufactured motorcycles with two-stroke engines only, the biggest two-stroke model being the water cooled triple-cylinder GT750. Its off road bikes and road racers have won world titles, and its street machines range from the cruiser Boulevard series to the legendary GSX-R series of sport bikes. It along, with Honda, is unique in that the company also builds automobiles.
A significant factor in Suzuki’s success in two-stroke competition was the East German Grand Prix racer Ernst Degner, who defected the West in 1961, bringing with him expertise in two-stroke engines from the East German manufacturer MZ. Suzuki then hired him and he won the road racing World Championship in 1962 to name just one of his victories. Suzuki became the first Japanese manufacturer to win a motocross wold championship and established themselves in the motorcycle racing world winning world championships in the premier 500 cc division in road racing and motocross respectively. Suzuki continues to compete in MotoGP and last won the title in the 2000 seasons.
By 1954, Suzuki was producing 6,000 motorcycles per month and had officially changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. Following the success of its first motorcycles, Suzuki created an even more successful automobile: the 1955 Suzulight. Suzuki showcased its penchant for innovation from the beginning. The Suzulight included front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering — features common on cars half a century later.
Suzuki has many notable motorcycles. These include: Hayabusa (GSX-1300R), GSX-R1000, GSX-R750, GSX-R600, GSX-650F, GSX-R1100L, SV650, Burgman, RGV250, DL-650 V Strom. In 2015, the best-selling Suzuki bikes included the GSX-R1000 L5, the GSX-R750 L5 and the DL 1000. The GSX-r1000 had always been overshadowed by many rivals offering more torque, better handling, and a beefier 'bite', but somehow it's retained it's charm amongst bike-buyers in the UK and according to a survey by VisorDown.com was the 3rd best-selling Suzuki of 2015. Closely pipped to the second spot is the GSX-R750 L5 which is a race-replica that has outsold it's 600cc and 1000cc models partly due to the fact that for a lot less money, you still get a 150 horses. The only thing the R750 needs is a bit of an update. The best-selling suzuki was the DL 1000 AL4 or 'V-Strom' which sits firmly in the category of 'adventure bike'. Suzuki certainly offer a range of different styles, all suited to different terrains and experience, from life on the edge track bikes, to to reliable commuter bikes and scooters they've certainly put their efforts into creating a brand that appeals to every rider. Their entry-level bikes include the Van Van 125 and Inazuma 250Z which are great for city rides and day-long adventures, while at the other end of the scale the GSXR1000 and Hayabussa 1300 ABS push the boundaries on track.
