MV Agusta is a motorcycle manufacturer which was founded on 12 February 1945 in Cascina Costa in Italy. The company firstly began as an offshoot of the Agusta aviation company formed by Count Giovanni Agusta in 1923. The Count then died in 1927, leaving the company in the hands of his wife and sons, Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario and Corrado. Vincenzo Agusta along with his brother Domenico formed MV Agusta at the end of the Second World War as a means to save the jobs of employees of the Agusta firm and also to full the post-war need for cheap, efficient transportation. The acronym MV stands for Meccanica (Mechanics) Verghera which is the hamlet in which the very first MVs were made. The company firstly manufactured small displacement, Café racer motorcycles (mostly 125 to 150cc) through the 1950s and 1960s. Then in the 1960s, small motorcycle sales declined and MV started producing larger displacement cycles in more limited quantities. A 250cc and then later a 350cc twin were produced and a 600 cc four cylinder evolved then into a 750 cc.
Unfortunately in the 1990s, MV Agusta became heavily in debt. They were bought by a Malaysian car maker Proton in December in 2004. Then in December 2005, Proton sold MV Agusta to GEVI Spa, a Genoa based financing company for a token one euro excluding debt. By 2006, GEVI Spa with a 65% share of the capital had refinanced MV Agusta and the company was allowed to continue it its native Italy. In October 2009, Harley Davidson then announced that they would channel their interest into MV Agusta. In August 2012, Harley Davidson then announced that it had concluded the sale of MV Agusta and his wholly owned company, MV Agusta Motor Holding. MV Agusta then announced that for the first three months of 2010 bike sales increased by 50%.
