Ducati originates from Bologna in Italy. They do not only produce motorcycles for road use but also for motorcycle racing. In 1950, the first Ducati motorcycle was formed. This was a 60cc bike weighing 98lb (44kg) with a top speed of 40mph. In the 1960s, Ducati earned its place its motorcycling history by producing the fastest 250cc road bike then available.
Ducati is best known for its high performance motorcycles characterised by large capacity four stroke, 90 degree V-twin engines, featuring a desmodromic valve design. Modern Ducati’s remain among the dominant performance motorcycles available today particularly because of the desmodromic valve design, which is nearing its 50th year of use. While most other manufacturers utilise wet clutches (with the spinning parts bathed in oil), Ducati uses multiplate dry clutches in many of their current motorcycles. The dry clutch eliminates the power loss from oil viscosity drag on the engine.
In April 2012, Volkswagen Group’s Audi subsidiary announced its intention to buy Ducati for 860 million Euros. Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piech, a motorcycle enthusiast, had long appreciated Ducati and had regretted that he passed up an opportunity to buy the company from the Italian government in 1984. Analysts and cynics commented that a tiny motorcycle maker would not have a meaningful effect on a company the size of Volkswagen. Italian luxury car brand Lamborghini was strengthened under VW ownership. Notably and controversially, from the 1960s to the 1990s, the Spanish company MotoTrans licensed Ducati engines and produced motorcycles that, although incorporated subtle differences, were clearly Ducati derived. MotoTrain’s most significant machine was the 250 cc.
