BMW’S motorcycle history began in 1921 when the company commenced manufacturing engines for other companies. Motorcycle manufacturing now operates under the BMW Motarrad brand. BMW introduced the first motorcycle under its name, the R32, in 1923.

Should I Sell my Used BMW Bike?

There have been many different series’ of motorbike launched over the years as well as models. There have also been various improvements in technology related to the motorbikes and their design. The Paralever is one example. The Paralever is a further advance in BMW’s single sided rear suspension technology. It decouples torque reaction as the suspension compresses and extends, avoiding the tendency to squat under braking and reducing tyre chatter on the road surface. It was introduced in 1988 to R80GS and R100GS motorcycles. It is believed the term Paralever was developed due to the appearance of a parallelogram shape between the four lines making up the rear suspension.

There are currently four lines of BMW motorcycles. These are: F and G series singles, F series twins, R series and K series. The series differ primarily in the class of engine that each uses. The F series of single-cylinder BMW motorcycles was first launched in 1994. The mission of the F 650 was to provide an entry level BMW motorcycle. In 200, the F650 was redesigned, now with fuel injection and labelled the F650GS. In mid 2006, the F series added two new motorcycles to the line up. The F800S sports bike and F800ST sports tourer, both which use an 798 cc parallel twin engine built by Rotax. Both motorcycles feature a belt drive system, similar to what was used on the F650S.

Top 10 BMW Bikes

10. BMW K1200S

This Hayabusa-challenging sports-tourer is built for the motorway, with refined looks and electronic suspension all sat on 163bhp. Comfort, fit and finish come out as the K1200's better qualities, with brakes, heavy steering at low speed, and a clunky gearshift not affecting it's popularity.

9. BMW K1300S

The K1200S has grown up and transformed into the 1300. The reworked engine and capacity rise given it extra torque and power an improvd fuel consumption and a more stable front end at high speed. Better brakes, traction control and improved electronic suspension making this a superb hypertourer.Watch out for high running costs.

8. BMW K1200GT

The 2006-2009 model of the GT tourer replaced its flat-four predecessor, with a 152 bhp, inline-four block from the K1200S. Ok, it's not as elegant, but it's all-round capability, comfort, performance and build quality are worth noting with more power and comfort for the money. Heated seats and sizeable tank also offer bonus points.

7. In at number 7 it's the R1200RT! 15% more power than the previous years, 20kg less weight, more torque and a tonne of electronic magic to give it an agile and lively feel whilst remaining stable and comfortable. Offers a high riding position, quality paniers and a decent sized windscreen.

6. BMW R1200R

The R1200R was the rebuild of the five-year-old R1150R in 2006. Lighter, more powerful, effective Telelever front suspension. It's a mixed bag of classic BMW and almost-racey stability, comfort and reliability.

5. BMW F800ST

Powered by Rotax-built parallel twins, it's a popular choice amongst sport-touring riders with a low seat option and smaller frame than the R or K counterparts. Smooth ride, good handler and great performance thanks to the onboard computer, 85mpg fuel economy and cracking (not literally) ABS. Not great for taller riders due to the weight distribution.

4. BMW K1200LKT

Matched only by the Honda Goldwing, the 1200 KLT is a mighty giant, weighing in at 390Kg and ignited with a glowing 115bhp four cylinder. Nicknamed 'the flying brick' it's definitely built for long journeys and pensioners who require a smooth ride, cd changer, heating and massive turning circle.

3. BMW K1200R

Ok, it's just a stripped down K1200S, but still the worlds most powerful back in 2005. It's styled bug-headlights, duolever suspension and heart-murmering acceleration make this one a stiff contender for the top helping to move BMW away from the 'big slow bike' tag it had started to develop.

2. BMW R1100S

It's an old favourite for many, and a sporty one at that - the R1100S. Taking us back to the end of the 90's, it's now even a bit old for us, but it's in there as an owner's favourite that is considered an ideal sportsbike for real-world scenarios. At 1085cc, the 98bhp boxer twin engine and six-speed gearbox give it great road handling but varied fuel economy. Not as comfortable as the tourer.

1. BMW S1000RR

This 14000rpm monster screams across any track or backroad if you're lucky enough to get the chance to fully test it. Traction control and the 193bhp engine gives incredible power delivery, sharp responsive handling and comfort to go with it, making the S1000RR a winner in many owner's eyes.
